Patriotic Images on view at the NMAI

The National Museum of American Illustration announces its Sixth Anniversary Celebration, July 1st and 2nd. During this event, the Museum will be open both days from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. for self-guided tours; Additionally, on view these two days only will be a special selection of patriotic images from the collection archives.

The Museum first opened to the public on July 4, 2000. “We selected July 4th, 2000, as the opening date of the Museum, choosing, as an institution devoted to American art, to align the birth of the Museum with the birth of our nation, and the birth of a new millennium,” said Laurence Cutler, Museum Chairman. “To celebrate the Museum’s anniversary this year, we are pleased to feature a selection of patriotic images not usually on display.” Works by Rockwell, Leyendecker, James R. Shaver, Howard Chandler Christy, among others, will be included.

“Sixth Anniversary Celebration” will offer visitors the opportunity to view the Museum at their own pace for self- guided tours. The Museum is typically open year-round for guided tours by reservation only.

The National Museum of American Illustration is a nonprofit independent, educational, and aesthetic organization. It is located in Newport, RI on Bellevue Avenue at Vernon Court (1898), a Beaux-Arts adaptation of an 18th century French chateau. It is the first national museum devoted exclusively to American illustration art. Illustration consists of original artwork created to be reproduced in books, magazines, newspapers and advertisements. ‘Golden Age’ paintings by such luminaries as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, NC Wyeth, and 75 others are displayed in ‘Gilded Age’ architecture, creating a unique union of art and architecture- a national treasure. The Museum is administered by the American Civilization Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the goal to present the best possible venue for appreciating the greatest collection of illustration art; the most American of American art.
